right troops I think I should clarify - *I* myself do not drink buckfast nor do I participate in sectarian behaviour. I just mean that is the *culture* I am from and the circles in which I move. instead of like the shortbread tin idea of Scottish culture that makes people think you might know or care about Burns or St Andrew or Edinburgh. please don't run me out of this website full of poets and 'autumn vibes' 😭😭😭
No way, you're not getting run out of here, not a chance. Your vibes are the ones we want (well, the ones I want). Substack needs more of this and fewer poets (shit, now poets are going to come after me).
I lived in Edinburgh for a while and also worked part-time at a small newsagents on the Royal Mile, and we'd get a wonderful motley mix of tourists coming in for badge pins and trinkets and the local crowd demanding their buckfast and Irn Bru. Good times, I enjoyed it.
somehow missed this, but thank you for saying that! I didn't know you lived in Edinburgh (so did I for a while), you've lived everywhere by the sounds of it???
After a lifetime of music and acting training, I too have an aversion to performing. After a brutal cut from a prestigious conservatory, I decided to only perform behind a curtain from then on. And you know what? Accompanying musicals pays REALLY well and I had much more fun interacting with the band than I ever did with any of my cast mates. I'm glad you were able to purge the trauma of that bad performance because I never could.
"I’m not really whisky-and-tartan Scottish; I’m more buckfast-and-sectarianism Scottish."
Remind me to stay on your good side.
lmao
Holy...cow! I was going to highlight that same line, and I'm with Lewis on this.
I'm terrified now what you really think of me after my Belfast post about nearly being kneecapped by those Fenian lassies 😂
although I will say I definitely didn't *not* pick up on that bit of that story...
They were lovely girls, and I was so besotted with Briege that I was able to overlook their beliefs!
(seriously, full disclosure: I'm not a diehard Unionist or anything, no way!)

Well, not quite everywhere. Haven't lived in Paisley yet, for example.
Interesting use of ‘yet’. I also have never lived in Paisley. No ‘yet’ attached.
This is such a great account of overcoming “failure” — I loved this!
Thank you so much!
